McDonnell was awarded an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Stands With A Fist in Dances with Wolves and she is well-known for her performance as president Laura Roslin in Battlestar Galactica as the wife of President during Independence Day and for her starring part in Donnie Darko as the titular persona's mother.
